Is a bicycle insured on contents insurance?
When your bicycle is stolen, that's obviously annoying enough. Whether you are insured when your bike is stolen depends on how you are insured. Is your bicycle insured in the contents insurance? We explain.
Is a bicycle covered by contents insurance?
If your bicycle is stolen, it is wise to report it to the police as soon as possible. Then contact your insurer or agent immediately to report the theft. It varies per situation whether your bicycle is covered by your household insurance. Your insurer or agent can often tell you immediately whether your damage is covered.
Has your bicycle been stolen from your home or shed? In most cases this is covered by your household insurance. You have to be able to prove that your bicycle and the shed or house where it was stored, were locked. Is this not the case? Then the insurer will not pay the damage. So always make sure your bike is locked and your house or shed is locked. There must be traces of forced entry to the house or shed from which your bicycle was stolen.
Is your bicycle not stolen from your home or shed? In most cases the bicycle is not covered by your home contents insurance. For this you need a separate bicycle insurance.
Purchase separate bicycle insurance
As explained above, there are situations in which your bicycle is not covered by contents insurance. Do you want to insure your bike against theft on the street? Then you can purchase separate bicycle insurance at alpina.nl
Do you have a new or expensive bicycle or e-bike that is often left outside? Then bicycle insurance is definitely worth considering. Again, in case of theft, you must be able to prove that your bicycle or e-bike was locked. If you cannot, the theft is still not covered by bicycle insurance.
Taking out household contents insurance? Calculate your premium!
Bike insurance is not required by law, but it is certainly recommended. You pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for your bicycle. Theft can cause you to lose this investment all at once. With bicycle insurance, the theft will not leave you with any financial loss. The insurance often has a generous compensation. During the first three years, you will usually receive 100% of the insured amount in case of theft, and not the current market value of the bicycle.
With most bike insurance policies, you also don't owe a deductible. So you get the full claim amount back. For a relatively low premium, you can insure your bicycle against theft and accidental damage.
